A Texting Ministry Testimony
by Melissa Lundy

A few years ago a dear friend of mine went through one of life’s storms. Her husband lost his battle to melanoma. My friend, who was 38 years old at the time, was now a widow with three young children. It was during the hospital stays, the treatments, the times of uncertainty, the death of her husband, and the days to follow that I wanted to reach out and help her. However, I felt limited due to the distance between us. I live in central Pennsylvania and at the time she lived in Southern New Jersey.

I wanted to talk with her, to pray with her, but often times found it too difficulty. I was more comfortable with sending scriptures, prayers, and words of encouragement through text messages. Sometimes I would get a reply back, but most times I did not. Either way it didn’t matter…I just wanted her to know that I was thinking of her and lifting her up in prayer.

Eventually we were able to have a face to face encounter. It was during our time together that my friend shared with me how much she appreciated the text  messages and how helpful they were. It was at that moment that I realized I was doing a ministry. I was reaching out to my friend in love by sharing God’s word. I truly believe that our texting ministry at Simply God 101 meets each person where they’re at on their Christian walk. It is my hope that as you receive these devotions that you do not keep them to yourself, but that you pass them on to share God’s word. The great commission commands us to go and tell about Jesus. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). So go ahead, “be strong and courageous” (Joshua 1:6). Pass them on to share God’s word. You never know when you are making a difference. Praise God that we are able to use current technology and social networking to spread God’s love. God is on the move!
