Proverbs 18:21 tells us: “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Though extremely small, our tongue (representing our words) is extremely powerful. The words we speak to people, over people, and about people are all shaping the person who is receiving them. Are we breathing life into our spouse, children or co-workers? Are our words “killing” people and diminishing their confidence? James 3:2-12 explains that our words are directing situations like a bit guides a horse or a rudder guides a ship. He goes on to explain how words, like a small spark can set an entire forest on fire, can burn up an entire life. The highest percentage of forest fires are set by careless acts. Careless lies, intentional gossip, and heated words all have the potential to set an entire family or church ablaze. As a result, I challenge you today to ADMIT the fires you may have started with your words and take the necessary measures to put the fire out and repair any damage that has been created. Also, I want to challenge you to COMMIT your words to the Lord today. Ask God to use your words to honor Him, draw people closer to Him and build His kingdom.
