Mark 10:17-31
How many of us think that the way we can get ahead or get something from anyone is by doing something? It is a “performance” mentality. I know a lot of people think if they do good and follow the rules, i.e. the commandments, then they will go to Heaven or they will be rewarded in some form or fashion. But in this scenario with the rich ruler from today’s scripture, Jesus tries to teach us that it is so much more than that. In the scripture, the man tells Jesus he has followed all the commandments, but when Jesus asks him to give away his wealth and riches to the poor and to come and follow Him, the man becomes sad. The man was more focused on how much he had and his wealth than he was anything else. What we do and how we act in this life are more important than our status or what we have accumulated as far as riches or accolades. Jesus says the last will be first and the first will be last. So, don’t always worry about putting on a “performance” to be first. God is good 😉
